The Dutch have the sweet tradition of sending out “geboortekaarten” (birth cards) to announce the arrival of a new baby.
A joy to receive, these cards arrive in pretty little envelopes and reveal the child’s full name, birthday and often weight.
Also included is the new parent’s contact information - because of course you are going to want to schedule a “kraambezoek” to see this new human for yourself.
Parents will often put a great deal of effort into creating a beautiful custom card.
I have had the honor of painting portraits for quit a few of these special announcements.
This often means I get to be one of the first to meet the new baby - helping to gather source material in order to finish their portrait in time to be printed and sent out. Along with the card, the parents also receive a one-of-a-kind oil painting to cherish for a lifetime.
How does it work?
Commissioning a newborn portrait to be used for a birth card works a lot like commissioning a normal portrait. You can read more about the commissioning process here.
Most people choose either 18 x 24cm or 24 x 30cm for a newborn portrait. You can view the prices for all of my formats here.
I can understand that you would like to have the birth card out as soon as possible. With that in mind I will work fast, aiming to have the oil painting completed within two weeks of agreeing on the source image. I recommend that you contact me ahead of time with your intention to commission a birth card portrait, so I can make sure to create space in my schedule.
How do you prepare a source image for me? Photographing a newborn is no easy task - I have compiled some tips on how to photograph newborns here. If you have more questions on how to provide me with good source images please do not hesitate to contact me.
Once the painting is complete I will provide you with a high-quality image of your painting free of charge, that can be used in the design of your Geboortekaarten.
Would you prefer that I design the card for you? for an additional fee of 79 EUR, I will work with you to design your Geboortekaarten, and deliver it to the printer. You will be responsible for the cost of printing the cards.
