Portrait Commissions

Whether you are looking for a gift to give someone special or for a personal piece of art you can treasure forever, commissioning an oil portrait is a beautiful way to showcase someone you love, even if that’s yourself. I create colourful portrait paintings that don’t only capture the likeness of the person (or pet) but also illustrates their character. I’ll work with you to make the process easy so in the end you have something special and worth cherishing.

How does it work?

DISCUSSION

First, we start with a conversation. We’ll go over who the subject is, potential compositions, a desired size, and if there’s a deadline. If you’re not entirely sure on some things, that’s okay, I’m here to help guide you to find what would work best. After that, I will put together an initial quote for the painting. If you want an idea of what my commissioned portraits cost you can look at my pricing page.

IMAGERY

The next step is deciding on the source image. We’ll usually start by looking through a selection of photos of the subject that you like and together choosing which one will best translate into an oil painting. If you don’t have any pictures you love that’s okay, I’m more than happy to provide tips on how to take a reference shot, or if you’re local it’s possible to get your photo taken in my studio for a small fee. Is your reference photo black and white? no problem I can also work with that. Once we’ve decided on the image we can nail down the exact size, finalize the quote, take a deposit, and then get started!

PRODUCTION

I start by doing preliminary sketches and colour studies of my subject to really get to know their features and their character. Once I have a good feel for my subject I will hand-stretch my canvas with quality cotton and begin painting. In order to build up depth, I paint all my portraits in layers of colour which I apply over several weeks or sometimes months. Before I put the final touches on your portrait I will send a photo preview for you to review.

DELIVERY

Once the painting is finished, between 2 weeks to 3 months depending on the complexity, the remaining balance is due in full prior to shipping. Your painting can be complete either as an unframed work or I can frame it for you. You can find more information about the framing process and cost on my framing page. The completed portrait can be picked up if you are local otherwise it will be shipped. To learn more about shipping and the costs please look at my pricing page.
